Lock - Tailgate Lock Difficult to Open With Key Corroded

Tailgate Lock Corrosion
PROBLEM

The tailgate lock cylinder is corroded by salt spray, making it very difficult or impossible to open the tailgate with the key.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the tailgate lock cylinder and rubber grommet with the improved parts listed under PARTS INFORMATION. Before installing the new lock
cylinder, it should be re-keyed to work with the customer's existing ignition key.

1.

Remove the corroded tailgate lock cylinder, following the Service Manual procedure.

Disassemble the new cylinder assembly as follows:

Using a pair of pliers, remove the chrome bezel by rocking it back and forth.

Remove the "e" clip from the back.

^

Remove the white plastic rod holder and return spring.

Insert the key that came with the new cylinder into the lock and extract the tumbler holder from the cylinder.

Carefully extract the key from the tumbler holder. Remove the seven brass tumblers.

NOTE:

Each tumbler is backed by a small coil spring. These springs can fall out of the holder, so don't lose them.

Using a Honda Key Code book (Ilco Anicon or Curtis), cross-reference the key number on the customer's ignition key to its key code.

Obtain replacement tumblers from parts stock. Each tumbler has a number (1-6) stamped on it. Seven tumblers should be selected which match the
first seven digits of the Key Code (the eighth digit is not used for a tailgate lock). For example, a key code of 21315511 requires three tumblers
stamped with a 1, two stamped with a 5, one stamped with a 2, and one stamped with a 3. (Remember to drop the last digit.)
