Speedometer and Odometer Inoperative in 2WD Passport with A/T
SYMPTOM
The speedometer and odometer are inoperative.
NOTE:
Repair of an inoperative odometer may be affected by state or local laws.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The teeth on the driven gear of the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) have worn thin and no longer mesh with the drive gear.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the speedometer driven gear on the VSS.
Diagnosis
1.
Locate the vehicle speed sensor on the tail housing of the transmission. Disconnect the electrical connector.
2.
Remove the VSS mounting bolt. Remove the VSS and driven gear bushing from the transmission by pulling it straight out.
3.
Inspect the teeth on the driven gear.

If any of the teeth on the driven gear are worn down to less than 0.5 mm in width, go to Repair Procedure.

If all the teeth are in good condition, refer to section 8 of the service manual for speedometer troubleshooting.
