High or Erratic Idle
SYMPTOM
The engine occasionally idles at too high a speed, or the idle speed fluctuates.
PROBABLE CAUSES
1996-97:
^
Loose or corroded engine or body ground
^
High resistance in the TPS (throttle position sensor) ground circuit
^
Fuel pressure regulator is leaking fuel into the intake manifold
^
IAC (idle air control) motor is moving slowly or sticking intermittently
1998-99:
^
Loose or corroded engine or body ground
^
High resistance in the TPS ground circuit
^
Cracked intake manifold gasket
^
IAC (idle air control) motor is moving slowly or sticking intermittently
^
PSP (power steering pressure) switch is grounded
^
The PCM delays the switch, or does not switch, to feedback idle control (1999 with A/T and California emissions only)
^
Fuel pressure regulator is leaking fuel into the intake manifold
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Diagnose the cause of the idle condition, and select the proper REPAIR PROCEDURE.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE
Each REPAIR PROCEDURE requires you to use the Smart Cable to reprogram the PCM with the latest software. To select the latest software from the
CDROM, enter the year, model, engine, transmission, and emissions type (49-state or California). This will give you a list of broadcast codes. Select the
broadcast code at the top of the list.
