Differential Axle Housing: Service and Repair

PREPARATION 

-

Raise the vehicle and support it at the frame.

-

The hoist must remain under the rear axle housing.

REMOVE:   

1. Rear wheels and brake calipers or drums.
2. Sensor connector (4X2 ABS or RWAL) (14) or sensor connector (4X4 ABS) (15).
3. Shock absorber nuts (1) and washers (11).
4. Shock absorbers (2) from the anchor plates (12).
5. Bolts (3) from the pinion flange (5):

a. Mark the propeller shaft (13) and the pinion flange (5).
b. Support the propeller shaft (13) out of the way.

6. Brake lines at the axle housing.
7. Brake lines at the backing plates.
8. Nuts (8) and washer (11).
9. U-bolts (6) and anchor plates (12).

10. Harness connector from speed sensor: 

a. Move the axle from above the springs.
b. Lower the axle from the vehicle using the hoist.

INSTALL:  

1. Axle into the vehicle using a hoist.
2. Harness connector to speed sensor.
3. U-bolts (6) and anchor plates (12).
4. Nuts (8) and washers (11). (First, semi-tighten the nuts in a diagonal pattern and then fully tighten the nuts to the specified torque.) Torque:

-

1st step: 25 Nm (18 ft lbs) 

-

2nd step: 66 Nm (49 ft. lbs.) 

5. Brake lines to the backing plate.
6. Brake lines at the axle housing. Bleed the brake system.
7. Propeller shaft (13). Line up the marks on the propeller shaft (13) with the marks on the pinion flange (5).
8. Bolts (3) to pinion flange (5).

Torque 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).

9. Shock absorbers (2) to the anchor plates (12).

10. Nuts (1) and the washers (11). 

-

Torque 39 Nm (29 ft. lbs.).

11. Sensor connector (4X2 ABS or RWAL) (14) or sensor connector (4X4 ABS) (15).
12. Rear wheels and brake calipers.
13. Lubricant to a level within 9.5 mm (3/8 inch) of the filler plug hole.
