Axle Bearing: Service and Repair

TOOLS REQUIRED 

-

Bearing Splitter or equivalent.

-

Bearing installer (Steel pipe 25 1/2 inches long, 2.000 inches O.D., 1.625 inches I.D.)

-

Shop press

PREPARATION 

-

Raise the vehicle.

REMOVE:  

1. Rear wheels and brake calipers or drums. Do not let calipers hang from the vehicle by the brake line or hose. Wire them to frame of vehicle to

prevent damage.

2. Four nuts (11) and lockwashers (10).
3. Shaft assembly from the axle housing.
4. Snap ring and bearing cup.

5. Break retainer ring with hammer and chisel.

6. Break bearing cage with hammer and chisel. Bearing cage, and rollers.
7. Oil seal, retainer, assembly, and emergency brake assembly. Inspect:

-

Shaft for spalling or grooves from seal wear.

Retainer - bent or damaged.
