Fast Idle Valve: Testing and Inspection
Fast Idle Valve

1987 Prelude
    The fast idle valve is factory adjusted and should not be disassembled.

1.

Check PCV circuit hoses for proper connection and condition and ensure throttle valve is fully closed.

If idle speed is too high after engine is warmed up, proceed as follows:

a. Confirm that engine is fully warmed up.
b. Check whether idle control function is normal. Refer to ``A/C Idle Boost Solenoid Valve Adjustment.''
c. Remove cover of fast idle valve.
d. Check that valve is completely closed. If not, an air suction sound will be heard in the valve seat area. This can be detected by placing a

finger in the valve seat area.

e. If any suction is heard, valve is leaking. Replace fast idle valve and adjust idle speed. Refer to ``Tune Up'' section.

If idle speed is too low after engine is warmed up, proceed as follows:

a. Remove idle adjusting screw.
b. Wash idle adjusting screw and air bypass channel with carburetor cleaner, then readjust idle speed.

If fast idle speed is below 1000---1800 RPM when coolant temperature is below 86°F, proceed as follows:

a. Remove fast idle valve assembly from throttle body.
b. Apply cold water and cool wax part of fast idle valve to 41-86°F.
c. Blow through lower large port of fast idle valve and ensure a fairly large amount of air flows without resistance.
d. If air does not flow or resistance is great, replace fast idle valve and adjust idle speed.
