Buzzing From the Engine or Transmission While Decelerating
(Supersedes 00-054, dated March 20, 2001)
** Indicates updated information **
SYMPTOM
While decelerating in 3rd or 2nd gear, a buzzing or rattling comes from the engine or transmission between 4,000 and 3,000 rpm. This noise sounds
similar to a heat shield rattle, and it goes away if you press lightly on the accelerator pedal or disengage the clutch.
PROBABLE CAUSE
Gear backlash in the transmission.
BACKGROUND
Clearance between transmission gears (backlash) is normal and sometimes audible. In an S2000, this noise is more noticeable since the transmission is
between the seats instead of up front in the engine compartment. When the vehicle decelerates, its weight, together with the pulses from the engine,
excites the transmission gears, causing them to buzz or rattle.
** The four springs in the clutch disc hub act as a damper. The clutch disc listed in this service bulletin is an improved version of the countermeasured
disc released a year ago. Extensive testing has shown it to be quieter than any previous S2000 clutch discs.
If your customer had the previous clutch disc installed but still complains of deceleration noise, install the clutch disc listed in this service bulletin. **
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the clutch disc with the improved clutch disc.
