POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
EPROM TO1 REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
DESCRIPTION:
On automatic transaxle equipped models, the malfunction indicator lamp (check engine light) may illuminate during extended periods of engine idling
when the air conditioning is operating. Driveability and engine performance are not affected by this condition. Diagnosis with a scan tool indicates a
diagnostic code P1123 stored in the PCM. To correct this condition, the EPROM memory chip inside the PCM must be replaced.
Note:
Remove the EPROM from the PCM and not from the TCM.
*PCM: Powertrain Control Module
*TCM: Transaxle Control Module
*EPROM: Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory
SERVICE PROCEDURES:
1.
Record the customer's radio stations and disconnect the negative battery cable.
2.
Locate the TCM under the dashboard near the brake pedal. The TCM must be moved to the side to allow faster access to the PCM mounting bolts.
3.
Remove two (2) 10 mm bolts from the TCM bracket against the firewall and rotate it to the right and out of the way.
4.
Disconnect the harness from the PCM and remove two (2) 12 mm bolts. Slide the PCM unit out from its base bracket.
5.
Remove the mounting bracket from the PCM. With the bottom side up on the PCM, bend the ten tabs straight up to release the cover from the base
and separate.
6.
Identify the EPROM memory chip under the removable white retainer. Remove the white retainer.
7.
Carefully lift the EPROM from the socket straight up with equal pressure.
8.
Install new EPROM.
NOTE:
1.
The notch in the new EPROM should match up with the notch and direction of the EPROM receptacle.
2.
Before pushing in the new EPROM, check that all the pins on the EPROM match up with the hole positions on the EPROM receptacle.
3.
Gently push the EPROM into the receptacle.
9.
Install the plastic protector cap over the EPROM.
10.
Place the cover over the base. Turn the PCM upside down and bend the ten tabs down to fasten the base to the cover.
11.
Reconnect the mounting bracket to the PCM and install the PCM into the vehicle. Start the engine to confirm correct installation.
12.
Reconnect the negative battery cable and reset the customer's radio stations and clock.
13.
Open the left door and place a punch mark over the 1 character of the VIN on the B-Pillar identification plate. This will indicate that the procedure
has been completed.
