1998 ACCENT & TIBURON REAR HATCH LATCH CHANGE

DESCRIPTION:

The 1998 Accent and Tiburon rear hatch latches feature a secondary latch position, similar to a passenger door latch. The luggage compartment light and
the "hatch ajar" light will be on only when the hatch is open, and will be off when the hatch is fully closed. However, if the hatch is secured in the
secondary latch position, both the luggage compartment light and the "hatch ajar" light will remain illuminated. Fully closing the hatch will turn the
lights off.

If the luggage compartment and "hatch ajar" lights are both illuminated, the hatch may be only partially closed. The hatch may be adjusted to reduce the
closing force necessary to fully latch.

Note: 

The remote cable operated hatch release handle has been deleted and an outside release handle has been added to the rear hatch of the 1998 MY
Accent 3-door. See TSB # 97-80-002 for further details.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE:

1.

Close the hatch lightly to engage the secondary latch. Note if the luggage compartment and "hatch ajar" lights are illuminated. Then firmly close
the hatch to verify that the luggage compartment and "hatch ajar" lights turn off when the hatch is fully latched.

2.

Make adjustments, if necessary, to reduce the hatch closing effort. (See appropriate Shop Manual for adjustment instructions.)
