Brake Caliper: Service and Repair

Removal

1.

Remove brake pads as outlined previously.

2.

Working at strut, disconnect brake tube from hose.

3.

Remove brake hose clip, then disconnect brake hose from strut.

4.

Remove caliper to steering knuckle mounting bolts, then the caliper assembly.

Disassembly

1.

Remove retaining bolts, separate inner and outer caliper, then remove torque plate from inner caliper, Fig. 1.

2.

Remove dust seal retaining ring and the dust seal.

3.

Protect fingers with shop towel, then blow piston from caliper bore with compressed air.

4.

Pry piston seal from caliper bore using suitable tool. Use caution to prevent scoring of bore.

Assembly

1.

Clean all parts with new brake fluid.

2.

Inspect caliper bore, piston and torque plate for damage or excessive wear. Replace parts as necessary.

3.

Lubricate new piston seal with suitable grease and caliper bore with clean brake fluid, then install seal into bore.

4.

Press piston into caliper bore. Ensure piston does not cock to one side during installation.

5.

Lubricate torque plate and bushings with suitable grease, then install torque plate onto inner caliper.

6.

Assembly inner and outer calipers and torque retaining bolts to 58-69 ft. lbs.

Installation

1.

Install caliper assembly onto steering knuckle and torque mounting bolts to 43-58 ft. lbs.

2.

Install brake hose onto strut with retaining clip.

3.

Connect brake hose to brake tube, install brake pads, then bleed brake system.
