SUBJECT:
ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSION
DESCRIPTION:
An improperly adjusted accessory drive belt may result in noise, damage to the driven component, or belt failure. This bulletin reviews the correct
methods of setting drive belt tension and contains updated belt tension specifications.
SERVICE PROCEDURES:
There are two methods of checking belt tension.
1.
Belt tension gauge; the most accurate, and the method to use wherever possible.
2.
Deflection method; where space limitations will not allow the use of a tension gauge: Apply 22 lb force (push or pull) at widest span between
pulleys and measure deflection.
BELT TENSION GAUGES:
Type A: Borroughs; model BT-33-73F
When using a Type A tension gauge,.keep dial portion of gauge from contacting any object during measurement.
Type B: Nippondenso; model BTG-2O
The Type B tension gauge holds the reading obtained during measurement, allowing gauge to be be removed for easier reading. Be sure to reset tension
gauge prior to each measurement.
