Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Description and Operation
Instrument Cluster Component Locations
PURPOSE
The malfunction indicator light (MIL) illuminates to warn the driver if a malfunction occurs in the following circuits
circuits:

Electronic Control Module (ECM)

Heated Oxygen sensor (HOS2)
-
Mass Air-flow sensor (MAF)
-
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT)
-
Camshaft sensor (CMP)
-
Crankshaft Position sensor (CKP)
-
Throttle position sensor (TP)
-
Knock Sensor (KS)
-
Boost Sensor (TC)
-
Battery
-
Air Conditioning Compressor
-
Injector
-
EVAP Cannister Purge Solenoid
-
Idle Speed Actuator
-
Air/Fuel Control
LOCATION
The MIL is located in the instrument panel.
OPERATION
The ECM stores a code for the fault. Immediately after the ignition switch is turned on, the MIL light will light for 5 seconds to indicate that the light
operates normally. When an irregular signal returns to normal the MIL light goes out. Also, when the ignition switch is turned off, the light goes out. If
the engine is re-started the light will not come back on until the fault re-occurs, but a code will be stored in the ECM memory.
