Valve Clearance: Adjustments

VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT (COLD) 

1. Bring the piston in either the No. 1 cylinder or the No. 4 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke by turning the crankshaft

until the crankshaft pulley TDC line is aligned with the timing mark.

2. Check the rocker arm shaft bracket nuts for looseness. Tighten any loose rocker arm shaft bracket nuts to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.) or bolts to 8 Nm (6

ft. lbs.) before adjusting the valve clearance.

3. Check for play in the No. 1 intake and exhaust valve rocker arm. If the No. 1 cylinder intake and exhaust valve rocker arms have play, the No. 1

piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.

NOTE:  If the No. 1 cylinder intake and exhaust valve rocker arms are depressed, the No. 4 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.

4. Adjust the No. 1 or the No. 4 cylinder valve clearance to 0.15 mm (0.006 inch) for intake and 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) for exhaust when cold, while

their respective cylinder are at TDC on the compression stroke.

5. Loosen each valve clearance adjusting screw as shown in the illustration.
6. Insert a feeler gauge of the appropriate thickness between the rocker arm and the valve stem end.
7. Turn the valve clearance adjusting screw until a slight drag can be felt on the feeler gauge.
8. Tighten the lock nut to 13 Nm (113 inch lbs.).
