Audible Warning Device: Description and Operation
Warning Devices
Driver Warning Chime
The driver warning chime provides the driver with an audible warning when the key is in the ignition, a door is open, headlamps are on or the safety belt
is not engaged. The driver will also be provided with a visual message or visual warning displayed in the information message center when the ignition is
in the RUN position. The system uses a number of inputs to provide the driver with audible and visual warnings.
Instrument Cluster
The instrument cluster acts as a system monitor for the audible and visual warnings. It receives inputs from switches and sensors directly or through the
multiplex link from another module and triggers the necessary warning chime or visual warning
Ignition Switch Lock Cylinder (North America Only)
A warning chime will sound continuously when the driver door is open and the key is in the ignition, on removal of the key the warning will cease. The
switch is an integral part of the ignition lock cylinder and therefore can only be installed with the lock cylinder.
Luggage Compartment Switch
The luggage compartment switch activates the system to provide a visual warning when the ignition is in the run position and the luggage compartment is
open/ajar.
Door Ajar Switches
The door ajar switches activate the system to provide a visual warning when the ignition is in the run position and any of the doors are open/ajar.
Headlamp Switch
A warning chime will sound continuously when the driver door is open/ajar and the vehicle lamps are on. This warning is provided whether the key is in
or out of the ignition and will cease after five minutes, when the lamps are switched off or when the door is closed.
Safety Belt Switch
A warning chime will sound continuously for approximately six seconds (North America only) when the driver turns the ignition to the RUN position
and the safety belt is not engaged, a warning lamp will also be illuminated and show continuously (the warning lamp will illuminate for one minute only
in North America). The warning chime and lamp will cease if the safety belt is engaged. The switch is a integral part of the driver safety belt buckle and
cannot be replaced individually.
Air Bag Redundant Chime
If a fault is present in the supplementary restraints system and the warning lamp in the instrument cluster is inoperative, then the restraints control module
will send a signal to the instrument cluster to activate the warning chime. The chime will not sound for the first 90 seconds when the ignition is in the
RUN position. The chime will then sound continuously for 5 seconds and stay silent for 5 seconds, this sequence repeats 5 times and the function will
repeat every 30 minutes.
Parking Brake Chime
The parking brake chime will sound if the parking brake is applied while the vehicle is moving or if the ignition key is turned to the off position and the
automatic transmission is not in park.
