The vehicle condition monitor (VCM) on a number of early production vehicles has displayed the "fueling failure" symbol when no such fault has
occurred. To prevent this from occurring the blue/green (U/G) wire at pin #10 of LB53, a 24 way PMHD yellow, was disconnected on the bulkhead
harness side and taped to the harness.
Starting at VIN 521255 a new Engine management ECU was installed
on all vehicles:
- P/N DBC 3711, low compression
-
P/N DBC 3713, high compression
These new ECU's eliminate the possibility of a false "fueling failure" illumination.
The "fueling failure" symbol has been reintroduced on production beginning at VIN 530856 by connecting the wire at PIN #10 of connector LB53.
For vehicles in service with the "fueling failure" symbol disabled, Pin #10 can be connected in service, if either condition listed below applies:

The VIN is higher than 521255
-
When a new ECU and idle speed control valve are fitted to a vehicle below 521255
Instructions for installing Pin #10 at connector LB53, are as follows:
1.
Release the secondary locking cover with a small screwdriver.
2.
Set the cover in the wire assembly mode, i.e. the cover fully extended on its four locking arms.
3.
Insert the pin and wire (blue/green) through the secondary locking cover.
4.
Insert the pin and wire into slot #10 and push wire until the locking tab "clicks" into place.
5.
Install the secondary locking cover on the connector body.
NOTE:
ECU P/N DBC 2911 is no longer available. When replacing ECU P/N DBC 2911 with DBC 3711 the idle speed control valve P/N EBC 1789 M
NOTE:
A temporary measure to disable the fuel failure warning function was detailed in Technical Bulletin Section 86, No. 7, issued in June, 1987.
