Antenna Mast - Cleaning and Replacement Procedure

ISSUE:
Antenna mast seizure and/or failure of the antenna motor assembly due to dirt/road film build up on the mast or mast bending.
ACTION:
The antenna mast must be cleaned whenever the vehicle is serviced:
1.
Turn the ignition to accessory.
2.
Switch radio on and allow antenna mast to fully extend.
3.
Using mast cleaner JLM 9830, clean the mast using upward strokes.
4.
Make sure all antenna mast joints are clean.
5.
Switch radio on and off several times to verify smooth operation.
If the mast does not operate smoothly, replace ONLY the mast using the following procedure:
1.
Loosen the antenna mast retaining nut.
2.
Switch ignition and radio on.
3.
Lift the mast and cable assembly out of the motor as it is driven to the extended position.
4.
Switch ignition off.
5.
During the 15 second delay period, install the new flexible drive cable into the mast motor opening. (Note the position of the cable teeth in relation
to the take-up gear in the motor).
6.
While the motor is retracting, engage the cable and allow the motor to draw, the cable and mast into the motor assembly.
7.
Tighten the retaining nut.
8.
Switch the radio on and off to verify smooth antenna mast operation.
If the motor assembly has FAILED, replace the motor and mast unit as follows:
1.
Disconnect the battery negative lead.
2.
Open the trunk and remove carpet and right-hand side liner as necessary.
3.
Disconnect the braided ground strap.
4.
Unscrew the coaxial cable from the motor unit.
5.
Disconnect motor electrical leads.
6.
Loosen nut(s) which hold motor unit in place.
7.
Disconnect drain tube.
8.
Remove antenna motor unit.
