Safety Recall # 267T -- Brake System Vacuum Tank Damage
Models:
1985, 1986 and 1987 Jeep Cherokee, Wagoneer and Comanche Models Equipped With the 2.1 Liter Turbo Diesel Engine
Brake booster vacuum reservoir tanks on the listed models (two tanks per vehicle -- mounted behind the front bumper) may develop leaks due to bumper
impact. Such leakage can result in the loss of power brake assist and an increase in stopping distance.
To avoid this condition, both brake booster vacuum tanks must be replaced with new type tanks that are less susceptible to impact damage.
In addition, two separate customer satisfaction repairs must be performed on certain involved vehicles as listed below. Based on the model year of the
vehicle being serviced, perform the brake vacuum tank replacement and one of the following additional repairs:

1985 and 1986 models must have the front suspension track bar mounting brackets replaced to prevent cracking of the sill at the bracket attachments.
In a few cases, the sill may also require repair or replacement. In such cases, contact your Zone Service Office for repair authorization and claim
processing instructions.

1987 models must have a rubber shield installed over the engine compartment glow plug relay to prevent electrical shorting due to water entry.
Details of this service are explained in the following sections.
Vehicle List
Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location) will receive a listing of them with this letter, arranged
in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of
involved vehicles.
Each Jeep/Eagle dealer without a Vehicle List will receive an information copy of this letter by Compak Mail.
Parts
Parts packages for brake, track bar and glow plug cover service are being shipped free of charge to all involved dealers. Each dealer to whom involved
vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same address) will receive enough parts to meet expected repair requirements.
If additional parts packages are needed for these repairs, they may be ordered without charge from Parts Depots. If sill repair or sill replacement is
necessary, order a sill reinforcement plate (gratis) or left sill (at dealer cost) as needed.
