FAN-TO-SHROUD CONTACT
On some 1987 Cherokee/Wagoneer models with a 4.0L engine, the mechanical cooling fan may touch the shroud during hard acceleration. Noise may be
heard inside the vehicle under these conditions. Evidence of fan-to-shroud contact is indicated by scuff marks on the shroud.
Service correction involves replacing either the shroud, or the fan, shroud and radiator crossmember depending on the degree of fan contact.
SHROUD INSPECTION
Inspect the mechanical cooling fan shroud for scuff marks as follows:

*If scuff marks are evident at both the 3 o'clock position (A) (Fig. 1) and the 12 o'clock position

(Fig. 2) or at the 12 o'clock position only proceed to the Shroud-Fan-Radiator Crossmember Replacement procedure.
