SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Some 1987 and 1988 Cherokee, Wagoneer and Comanche models with the 4.0L engine may experience an engine no start, hard restart or die-out
condition. This condition may be the result of inadequate signal strength from the crank position sensor (CPS).
DIAGNOSIS
Prior to performing this bulletin verify the following:
1.
The engine idle speed is 750 RPM. If not, refer to the adjustment procedures in I.S. Note 46E (M.R. 244 Cherokee/ wagoneer) or 39E (M.R. 277
Comanche).
2.
The vehicle has been checked with MS 1700 Diagnostic Tester and any indicated malfunction corrected.
If a problem persists proceed with the repair procedure below.

Automatic Transmission Service Kit:
PN 83-100-066 Crank Position Sensor Patch Harness Crank Position Sensor (CPS)
W/Elongated Hole Tie Straps (3) CPS Grommet (Dust Cover)
Manual Transmission Service Kit:
PN 83-100-063 Crank Position Sensor Patch Harness Crank Position Sensor (CPS) Tie

NOTE:

Repair Procedure
1.
Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position.
2.
Disconnect the negative and positive battery terminals.
