SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Some 1987-88 4.0L Cherokee, Wagoneer and Comanche vehicles may experience a no-start condition due to ice restricting return line fuel flow in the
fuel tank. This condition will occur at freezing temperatures (32~F or below) and when 1 to 3 quarts of water/ice is present in the fuel tank. Excessive
fuel pump noise may also be experienced.
NOTE:
WATER IN FUEL THE TANK IS NOT CONSIDERED A WARRANTY ELIGIBLE REPAIR.
DIAGNOSIS
Remove the vacuum hose from the vacuum port of the fuel pressure regulator and inspect for evidence of fuel. If fuel is present in the vacuum hose or the
regulator vacuum port, replacement of the fuel pressure regulator is required. In addition, if the vehicle has been exposed to freezing temperatures (32~F
or below) prior to the no-start complaint, water contamination in the fuel tank is likely. Proceed with the following repair procedure.
