TURBO-DIESEL ALTERNATOR
A Paris-Rhone alternator will be used on 1985 70 Series turbo-diesel engines (Fig. 1). This alternator features a built-in regulator and will be supplied in
two output capacities which are:
60 amp rated and 70 amp rated.
Turbo Diesel Alternator
The alternator warning light used with the ParisRhone alternator, is mounted on the instrument panel. It illuminates when the ignition switch is turned on
and goes out after the engine starts. If the light remains on or illuminates while the engine is running, a charging system malfunction has occurred.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If the warning light does not illuminate when the ignition switch is turned on:
^
Check to determine if the connector on the alternator regulator is loose or disconnected.
^
Check ring terminal on alternator case for a good ground.
^
Check bulb condition by grounding the 6.3 mm (0.25 in.) wide terminal on the connector. Check bulb and/or wiring, if the bulb does not light.
NOTE:
Refer to 1985 Electrical Troubleshooting Manual for schematic information, (see pages 28 and 29).
If the warning light illuminates when the engine is operating, there is a charging system defect that may be caused by:
^
Loose or broken alternator drive belt,
^
Internal malfunction (rotor, stator, diodes or brushes), and/or
^
Regulator malfunction.
If a charging system problem exists even though the warning light functions correctly but regulated voltage is less than 13.5 V, the problem may be
