THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 08-53-89, Dated 03/20/89. REVISION A, WHICH ALONG WITH 08-53-89
SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Vehicles may exhibit a fluctuating speedometer needle.
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN DOES NOT APPLY TO 1990 VEHICLES BECAUSE THEY ARE ALREADY EQUIPPED WITH THE NEW
CABLES.
DIAGNOSIS
To prevent speedometer needle flutter, it is very important that the speedometer cables are properly routed and aligned. Even the new service parts
replacement cables must be installed, routed, and aligned properly or they may cause the speedometer needle to flutter. Therefore, before replacing the
speedometer cables, check the following:
1.
Make sure the cables are installed and routed properly. Make sure that there are no sharp bends or kinks and that the cable is routed as straight as
possible into the speedometer head.
2.
Make sure the threaded cable connections are tightened securely.
3.
Make sure the tach generator for the cruise control functions properly and is not binding or seizing.
4.
If the cable alignment is correct and no other problems are found, the new service parts cables should be installed.

THESE NEW CABLES MUST BE INSTALLED PROPERLY OR SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE FLUTTER MAY OCCUR.
