OIL FILTER ADAPTER LEAK
Some Cherokee/Wagoneer/Comanche vehicles equipped with V-6 engines may leak at the engine oil filter adapter. This could be caused by a loose
adapter retaining bolt, oil filter adapter base warpage, or by foreign material on the oil filter gasket.
Service correction involves removing and inspecting the oil filter adapter.
OIL FILTER ASSEMBLY
PROCEDURE
1.
Raise the vehicle.
2.
Remove the oil filter.
3.
Remove the engine oil filter adapter (A) and gasket by removing retaining bolt (B).
CHECK FOR WARPAGE
4.
Clean the cylinder block and oil filter adapter mating surfaces of oil residue.
5.
Using a straight-edge (C), check for warpage across the adapter surface (D) that mates with the gasket.
6.
Replace the adapter if warpage exceeds 0.2 mm (0.008 in.).
7.
Install a replacement gasket, P/N 8983 500 839, onto the adapter.
8.
Install a replacement seal, P/N 8983 500 838, onto the adapter retaining bolt.
9.
Install the adapter on the engine block.
