Position the new steering gear on the frame rail and install the four mounting bolts. Tighten the four mounting bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 N.m).

Connect the electrical connectors to both washer pumps and the low fluid level sensor, and then install the washer reservoir. Tighten the washer
reservoir retaining screws to 66 in. lbs. (7.4 N.m).

Install the pitman arm onto the pitman shaft.

NOTE:

The front wheels must be in the straight-ahead position before installing the pitman arm.

Install the new lock washer and nut onto the pitman shaft. Tighten the pitman arm nut to 185 ft.lbs. (251 N.m).

Install the front skid plate (if equipped). Tighten all of the skid plate bolts to 40 ft.lbs. (54 N.m).

Lower the vehicle.

Attach the power steering pressure and return tubes to the steering gear (Figure 2). After hand starting the nuts, tighten the tube nut on each power
steering tube to 21 ft. lbs. (29 N.m).

Caution:

Make sure the 0-ring is properly positioned on the end of the power steering tubes before attaching tubes to the steering gear.

IMPORTANT:

There must be an air gap between the two power steering lines near the steering gear. Moan/whine noise complaints may result if the lines are
touching.

Install the steering column coupler onto the stub shaft of the steering gear.

27.

Install steering column coupler retaining bolt. Tighten the steering column coupler retaining bolt to 36 ft.lbs. (49 N.m).

Install the washer reservoir filler neck support screw (Figure 1).

29.

Connect the washer hose connections as marked in step 4 (Figure 1).

Install the air cleaner assembly.

31.

Install the left side plastic inner fender shield using new plastic rivets.

32.

Install the left wheel and tire assembly onto the vehicle. Tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (132 N.m).

33.

Perform the following steps to fill the power steering hydraulic system and purge the air from the new steering gear:

Using a clean shop towel, wipe off any dirt from the power steering fluid reservoir and fill cap area. Remove the fill cap and fill the power
steering pump reservoir with Mopar Power Steering Fluid (P/N 04883077) or equivalent. Do not use automatic transmission fluid.

NOTE:

The power steering fluid level on the dipstick should be at the "COLD" level when the power steering fluid is at normal ambient temperature.
Do not overfill the power steering system.

Raise the front wheels off the ground. With the engine off, slowly turn the steering wheel from stop to stop 20 times to purge the air from the new 
steering gear. Recheck the power steering fluid level and adjust the fluid level as required.

Start the engine and allow it to ruin for a few seconds and then turn off the engine. Check the power steering fluid level and add fluid if necessary.
Repeat this procedure and add fluid until the level remains constant after running the engine.

WARNING:

The power steering fluid level should be checked with the engine "off" to prevent injury from moving components.

Lower the front wheels onto the ground, start the engine and turn the steering wheel slowly from stop to stop. Turn off the engine and check the 
power steering fluid level and adjust the fluid level as required.

NOTE:

If the power steering fluid in the reservoir is extremely foamy or milky, allow the vehicle to stand a few minutes and recheck the fluid level.

34.

Check the power steering fittings to insure that there are no leaks.
