SUBJECT:
"Check Oil Level" Message Flashes Intermittently
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH VIC (VEHICLE INFORMATION CENTER) AND 4.0L ENGINE.
MODELS:
1993 (ZJ) Grand Cherokee
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Vehicles built prior to MDH 06-12-XX (June 12, 1992), may have the "check oil level" message flash intermittently when the oil level on the engine oil
dipstick shows OK.
DIAGNOSIS:
For vehicles built prior to MDH 04-16-XX (April 16, 1992), inspect the wiring to the engine starter motor and to the oil level sensor, below the oil filter,
for contact with the right upper control arm. Repair and reroute the oil level sensor wiring harness and/or inspect the date code stamped on the hex side
of the oil level sensor.
For vehicles built after MDH 04-16-XX (April 16, 1992), inspect the date code stamped on the hex side of the oil level sensor, if date code is prior to
1392 (139th day of 1992), replace the oil level sensor.

Repair Procedure
This repair involves wiring harness repair, routing and/or replacement of the oil level sensor with a revised sensor.
1.
Disconnect negative battery cable.
2.
Raise vehicle on hoist.
CAUTION
DO NOT BREAK CONNECTOR LOCKING TAB. THE TAB IS NEEDED TO MAINTAIN CIRCUIT CONTINUITY. THIS IS A 0.75 MILLIAMP
CIRCUIT.
