NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN AW-4 TRANSMISSION.
MODELS:
1993 (ZJ) Grand Cherokee
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The automatic transmission exhibits a squealing noise when shifted from reverse to either neutral or park.
DIAGNOSIS:
1.
Make sure that the transmission is at operating temperature and that the transfer case is in high range.
2.
Position the vehicle on a level surface. Turn off all accessories.
3.
Perform the following procedure with the engine at idle and the brakes applied.
a.
Shift the transmission into reverse and stay in gear for five seconds.
b.
Shift into neutral and stay in neutral for five seconds.
c.
Repeat step (a) and (b) 20 times.
d.
Repeat steps (a) and (b) another 20 times, this time shifting from reverse to park.
4.
If the noise is heard during any of the steps, perform the repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves the removal and disassembly of the valve body to install an additional check ball.
Remove the valve body and separate the upper and lower halves as outlined in the appropriate 1993 service manual. Install the additional check ball as
illustrated. Assemble the valve body and install it in the transmission. Install the oil pan using a 1/8 inch bead of RTV to seal it to the transmission case.
NOTE:
THE VALVE BODY SEPARATOR PLATE GASKETS ARE REUSABLE. REPLACE THEM ONLY IF THEY WERE DAMAGED DURING
DISASSEMBLY.
