Recall - Improper Fuel Tank Vent Tube Weld
August, 2000
Safety Recall No. 887 - Fuel Tank
Model
2000
(WJ)
Jeep(R) Grand Cherokee
NOTE:
This recall applies only to certain vehicles built from June 17, 2000 through June 22, 2000 (MDH 0617XX and 062202).
IMPORTANT:
Many of the vehicles within the above build period have already been inspected or repaired and, therefore, have been excluded from this recall.
IMPORTANT:
Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer new vehicle inventory. Federal law requires you to stop sale and complete this recall service on these
vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also consider this requirement to apply to used vehicle inventory and should perform this recall on
vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the DIAL VIP System.
Subject
The fuel tank on about 1,290 of the above vehicles may have an improper vent tube weld. Vent tube weld failure could cause the vent tube to separate
from the fuel tank and cause a fuel leak. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in an underbody fire.
Repair
The fuel tank build date code must be inspected and the fuel tank must be replaced if necessary.
Alternate Transportation
If inspection determines that fuel tank replacement is required and the vehicle must be held overnight, dealers should attempt to minimize customer
inconvenience by placing the owner in a loaner vehicle.
Parts Information
Due to the small number of involved vehicles expected to require fuel tank replacement, no parts will be distributed initially. Fuel tanks, fuel pump
module seals and plastic rivets should be ordered only after inspection determines that replacement is required. Very few vehicles are expected to require
fuel tank replacement
Completion Reporting and Reimbursement
Claims for vehicles that have been serviced must be submitted on the DIAL System. Claims submitted will be used by DaimlerChrysler to record recall
service completions and provide dealer payments.
