SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Some 1988 Jeep vehicles equipped with the 2.5L or 4.0L engine may experience an abnormal oil consumption rate (1 quart per 200 miles). This
consumption rate may be the result of an incorrectly installed crankcase vent (CCV) tube in the cylinder head cover grommet.
DIAGNOSIS
Inspect the position of the CCV tube from the intake manifold to the cylinder head cover grommet. Figure 1.
On vehicles equipped with the 2.5L engine the grommet is located at the rear of the cylinder head cover and at the front of the cylinder head cover on
vehicles equipped with 4.0L engine. If the moulded ring on the CCV tube is below the top of the grommet, the CCV tube has been installed too deeply
and the following Repair Procedure must be performed.
If the CCV tube is correctly installed inspect the engine for oil leaks, excessive cylinder(s) leak down rate or loose/broken cylinder head cover
baffles/chimneys. Repair engine as required.
