This bulletin supersedes Technical Service Bulletin #09-57-88, dated 10/3/88 which should be removed form your files. This new bulletin correctes an
error in the type 1 oil filter connector thread dimension.
Two (2) types of oil filters are used on the 4.2L (258 C.I.D.) engine and are not interchangeable.
FIGURE 1
TYPE 1 OIL FILTERS USED ON 1986 AND PRIOR 4.2L ENGINES DO NOT HAVE AN INTERNAL BYPASS. In the event the oil filter becomes
blocked a bypass system located in the engine block will ensure continuous oil flow (Figure 1). THE "TYPE 1" OIL FILTER HAS A 13/16 INCH
CONNECTOR THREAD AND MUST NOT BE USED ON 1987 AND LATER 4.2L ENGINES.
TYPE 2 OIL FILTER USED ON 1987 AND LATER 4.2L ENGINES HAS AN INTERNAL BYPASS. In the event the oil filter becomes blocked the
bypass system in the oil filter will ensure continuous oil flow. THE "TYPE 2" OIL FILTER HAS A 20 MM CONNECTOR THREAD AND MUST
NOT BE USED ON 1986 AND PRIOR 4.2L ENGINES.
