1.

Remove cover retaining bolts, cover and gasket.

2.

Using the preferred method, check gear end clearance as follows:

a. Place a strip of Plastigage across full width of each gear end.
b. Apply a bead of Loctite 515 or equivalent, around perimeter of oil pump cover and install onto oil pump.
c. Torque cover bolts to 70 inch lbs.
d. Remove oil pump cover and determine amount of end clearance by measuring width of compressed Plastigage.
e. Clearance should be 0.002 - 0.006 inch.

Using the alternate method, check gear end clearance as follows:

a. Place a straightedge across ends of gears and pump body.
b. Using a feeler gauge, measure gear end clearance. Clearance should be 0.004 - 0.008 inch.
c. If clearance obtained exceeds specified amount, replace oil pump assembly.

Using a feeler gauge, measure clearance between gear tooth and oil pump body inner wall directly opposite point of gear mesh. Rotate pump gears
and measure each gear tooth clearance. Clearance should be .0005-.0025 inch.

5.

If clearance obtained exceeds specified amount, replace idler gear, idler shaft and drive gear assembly.

6.

Remove cotter pin and slide spring retainer, spring and oil pressure release valve plunger out of oil pump body. Check parts for wear or damage.

7.

Install oil pressure release valve plunger, spring retainer and cotter pin.

8.

Install idler shaft, idler gear and drive gear assembly.

9.

Apply a suitable sealer to oil pump cover and install onto pump. Torque cover bolts to 70 inch lbs.
