Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Drain oil from engine.
3.
Remove oil pan attaching bolts, then the oil pan.
4.
Remove rear main bearing cap and lower oil seal.
5.
Loosen all remaining main bearing caps.
6.
Using a brass drift and hammer, tap oil seal until seal protrudes from groove. Pull oil seal from groove.
7.
Remove oil pan front and rear oil seals and oil pan side gaskets.
8.
Clean oil pan and engine block gasket surfaces.
9.
Clean main bearing cap.
10.
Clean sealing surface of crankshaft, then apply clean engine oil to crankshaft sealing surface.
11.
Coat lip of upper seal with engine oil, Fig. 18.
12.
Install upper seal into engine block. Lip of seal must face toward front of engine.
13.
Coat both sides of lower seal end tabs with RTV sealer or equivalent. Do not apply RTV to lip of seal.
14.
Coat outer curved surface of lower seal with soap and seal lip with clean engine oil, Fig. 18.
15.
Install seal completely into cap recess.
16.
Coat both chamfered edges of rear main bearing cap with RTV or equivalent.
17.
Install rear main bearing cap. Torque all main bearing cap bolts a little at a time to specification.
18.
Install oil pan, add engine oil and connect battery ground cable.
