Horn Switch: Service and Repair
Some steering shafts have metric steering wheel nut threads. Check and identify shaft thread type before installing a replacement steering wheel nut.
Metric steering shafts have an identifying groove in the steering wheel splines.
GRAND WAGONEER J-10, 20 & 1980-83 CHEROKEE & WAGONEER
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Ensure front wheels are in straight ahead position.
3. On models with standard steering wheel, remove horn cover attaching screws from underside of steering wheel, then the cover. On models with
sport type steering wheel, disconnect horn wire, then remove retainer and spring assembly.
4. Remove steering wheel nut and washer.
5. On models with sport type steering wheel, remove receiver bushing attaching screws, then the bushing, horn button receiver and contact plate.
6. Paint or scribe an alignment mark on steering wheel and steering shaft for installation.
7. Using a suitable puller, remove steering wheel from steering shaft.
8. Reverse procedure to install.
