Steering Column: Service and Repair
Without Tilt
Removal/Installation
EXCEPT 1984 - 87 CHEROKEE, WAGONEER, 1986 - 87 COMANCHE & 1987 WRANGLER
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Paint alignment marks on steering column and intermediate shaft.
2. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission shift rod from steering column shift lever. On Cherokee and
Wagoneer models equipped with automatic transmission and power brakes, the gearshift lever must be moved to the 1 detent position to
gain access to the shift rod to shift lever retaining clip.
3. Remove steering column-to-immediate shaft U-joint pinch bolt. Do not attempt to separate steering column and intermediate shaft at this
time.
4. On Cherokee and Wagoneer models with air conditioning, remove left air duct extension.
5. Remove steering column-to-instrument panel bezel.
6. Remove steering column mounting bracket-to-instrument panel attaching bolts.
7. Remove steering column mounting bracket-to-steering column attaching bolts, then the bracket.
8. Remove top and bottom toe plates.
9. Disconnect ignition switch electrical connectors.
10. Disconnect Cruise Command electrical connector from harness, if equipped.
11. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect harness electrical connector from neutral safety switch.
12. Separate steering column from intermediate shaft, then remove steering column from vehicle.
INSTALLATION
Use only correct screws, bolts and nuts when servicing the steering column. Do not use any substitute fasteners. Tighten all fasteners to
specification to maintain the energy absorbing (compression) action of the steering column.
1. Install steering column into vehicle and connect to intermediate shaft.
2. Install intermediate shaft-to-column U-joint pinch bolt. Torque bolt to 45 ft. lbs.
3. Connect cruise control electrical connector, if equipped.
4. Connect electrical connectors onto ignition switch. Install white electrical connector onto switch first, black electrical connector last.
5. Install upper and lower toe plates. Finger tighten toe plate attaching bolts.
6. Install mounting bracket onto steering column. Torque bracket attaching bolts to 20 ft. lbs.
7. Correctly align steering column mounting bracket and instrument panel, then finger tighten mounting bracket-to-instrument panel bolts.
8. Pull steering column upward and torque column mounting bracket-to-instrument panel bolts to 20 ft. lbs. Be sure to maintain upward pressure
on column when torquing bolts.
9. Torque toe plate attaching bolts to 10 ft. lbs.
10. Install both halves of steering column-to-instrument panel bezel.
11. On Cherokee, Wagoneer and truck models with air conditioning, install left air duct extension.
12. Install transmission shift rod-to-steering column lever.
13. Connect all electrical connectors and switches onto steering column. Check switches for proper operation.
14. Install instrument panel trim and left side air conditioning duct, if equipped.
15. Connect battery ground cable.
