Front Steering Knuckle: Adjustments
EXCEPT WRANGLER
1. Remove front axle shafts as described in Front Wheel Drive Section under "Axle Shaft, Replace."
2. Loosen lower ball stud jam nut, then remove upper ball stud nut.
3. Unseat ball studs from yoke using suitable hammer.
4. Remove upper ball stud split ring seat and discard.
5. Remove lower ball stud jam nut and steering knuckle. Discard jam nut.
6. Clean upper ball stud split ring seat threads, lower ball stud taper in steering knuckle, threads and tapered surfaces of ball studs, and upper ball
stud retaining nut threads.
7. Position steering knuckle on axle and install a new lower ball stud jam nut finger tight.
8. Install upper ball stud nut and torque 10-20 ft. lbs. to draw upper ball stud into yoke. Do not install upper ball stud split ring seat at this time.
9. Torque lower ball stud jam nut to 80 ft. lbs.
10. Remove upper ball stud nut and install a new split ring seat. Torque split ring seat to 50 ft. lbs. Install upper ball stud nut and torque to 100 ft. lbs.
Align and install cotter pin. Do not loosen nut to align cotter pin holes. Tighten only enough to align the holes and install cotter pin.
11. Install front axle shafts and steering spindles loosely and measure turning effort of each steering knuckle as described in "Ball Stud Preload,
Measurement."
a. If turning effort is less than 10 ft. lbs., proceed to next step.
b. If turning effort is more than 10 ft. lbs., replace upper and lower ball studs as described in "Ball Studs, Replace."
12. Install front axle shafts and connect tie rod to steering knuckle arms. Torque tie rod end retaining nuts to 45 ft. lbs.
13. Attach connecting rod to tie rod. Torque connecting rod nut to 60 ft. lbs. on CJ and Scrambler models; and 75 ft. lbs. on all other models. Install
steering damper if equipped.
14. Install front wheels and lower vehicle.
