Wagoneer L6-258 4.2L VIN C 2-bbl (1982)
a. Axle shaft endplay is adjusted at the left side axle shaft only.
b. Strike end of each axle shaft with lead hammer to seat bearing cups against support plate.
c. Attach axle shaft endplay tool J-2092 or equivalent to end of left side axle shaft and mount dial indicator on support plate or tool, then check
endplay while pushing or pulling on axle shaft. Endplay should be 0.004-0.008 inch.
d. Adjust shim pack as necessary, adding shims to increase endplay or removing shims to decrease endplay.
12. When installing original hub, proceed as follows:
a. Align keyway in hub with axle shaft key and slide hub onto axle shaft as far as possible.
b. Install axle shaft nut and washer, then the brake drum, drum retaining screws and wheel assembly.
c. Lower vehicle to ground, then torque axle shaft nut to 250 ft. lbs. and install cotter pin. If cotter pin hole is not aligned, tighten nut to next
castellation, do not loosen nut to align cotter pin hole. When a replacement axle shaft is installed, a replacement hub must also be installed. A
replacement hub may be installed on an original axle shaft if the serrations on the shaft are not worn or damaged.

13. When installing replacement hub, proceed as follows:
a. Align keyway in hub with axle shaft key and slide hub onto shaft as far as possible.
b. Lubricate two thrust washers with liberal amount of chassis grease and install washers on axle shaft.
c. Install axle shaft nut, then the brake drum, drum retaining screws and wheel assembly.
d. Lower vehicle to ground, then tighten axle shaft nut until distance from hub outer face to axle shaft outer end is 15/16 inches.
e. Remove axle shaft nut and one thrust washer.
f.
Install axle shaft nut and torque to 250 ft. lbs.
g. Install new cotter pin. If cotter pin hole is not aligned, tighten nut to next castellation, do not loosen nut to align cotter pin hole.
