Differential Axle Housing: Service and Repair
1984-87
1. Apply parking brake and place manual transmission in 1st gear, or automatic transmission in Park.
2. Remove and discard cotter pins, then remove axle shaft nuts.
3. Raise and support rear of vehicle and remove rear wheels.
4. Remove brake drum retaining screws, then release parking brake and remove brake drums.
5. Using suitable puller, remove axle hub.
6. Disconnect brake lines at wheel cylinders, then remove support plates, oil seals and retainers and the endplay shims.
7. Using suitable tool, remove axle shafts.
8. Remove axle housing cover and drain lubricant, then reinstall cover.
9. Disconnect parking brake cables at equalizer.
10. Scribe alignment marks on propeller shaft and axle yokes for proper assembly, then disconnect propeller shaft at axle yoke.
11. Disconnect flexible brake hose at body floor pan bracket, then the vent hose at the axle tube.
12. Support rear axle with suitable jack.
13. Disconnect shock absorbers at spring tie plates.
14. Remove spring U-bolts, spring plates and spring clip plate, if equipped.
15. Lower jack and remove axle.
16. Reverse procedure to install.
