Transmission Brake Shoe Rattle at 2800/3000 RPM AFFECTED VEHICLES All 200/300 Tdi Diesel derivatives:

MODEL

Range Rover Range Rover from LH 643000 - Discovery from LJ 063556 - Discovery Defender Defender from LD 935799

DETAIL

A small number of reports have been received that identifies a rattle from the transmission at 2800-3000 rpm. Investigations by Land Rover engineers have identified that within this rpm range the transmission brake shoes can rattle against the transmission backplate. To overcome this condition an additional spring can be fitted to the brake shoe cross-strut that will provide tension on the brake shoes pulling them against the backplate which eliminates the rattle.

ACTION REQUIRED

O n customer complaint fit the anti-rattle spring kit following the procedure below.

PARTS INFORMATION

STC 1792 - Anti-rattle spring kit

PROCEDURE

1) Remove the transmission brake backplate from vehicle. Refer to workshop manual section 41. 2) Remove the brake shoes from the backplate. 3) On the centre line, at the top of the backplate drill a 6 mm hole, as shown in the illustration opposite. 4) Fit the round shaped end of the spring into the backplate. 5) With both spring and cross-strut flat to the backplate (to avoid stretching the spring) locate the square shaped end of the spring onto the centre of the cross-strut and then rotate both the spring and cross-strut to the vertical plane. 6) Rebuild brake assembly and re-fit to vehicle, refer to workshop manual. 7) Adjust handbrake, refer to workshop manual.
