PROBLEM:

AUXILIARY DRIVE BELT NOISE/TENSIONER FAILURE - ALTERNATOR PULLEY

Change to diameter of alternator pulley with 1996 Model Year (MY) introduction.

Instances have occurred where incorrect replacement parts have been fitted. This can result in auxiliary belt noise and over - extension of the tensioner, leading to failure.

As the Discovery tachometer is sensed from the alternator, incorrect engine speed will also be displayed.

CAUSE:

Confusion over the correct auxiliary drive belt/alternator pulley applications.

ACTION:

Refer to the information which follows to ensure that the correct auxiliary drive belt, alternator and alternator pulley combination is used.

NOTE:

The Defender alternator and 61 mm pulley are currently not available. Alternator AMR4249 with 49 mm pulley is supplied in lieu.

Where the correct installation is a 61 mm pulley, the pulley from the displaced alternator MUST be transferred to the new alternator.

Further details of Defender applications will be given when parts are available.
