AFFECTED RANGE:

All Td5 diesel derivatives (99MY) up to VIN XA 171621

PROBLEM:

ENGINE WILL NOT START IN FREEZING CONDITIONS The engine cranks but will not start when ambient temperature is below 0°C.

CAUSE:

Moisture present in the EGR modulator valve has frozen.

ACTION:

Reposition the modulator valve and filter on the mounting bracket, as described below. 1. Disconnect the three pipes and the electrical connector from the EGR modulator valve. 2. Unscrew two nuts and remove the modulator valve from the flexible mountings. 3. Ensure that the modulator valve is thawed out. Invert and shake to expel moisture. 4. Refit the modulator valve to the mountings in the inverted position, ie, with the electrical connector uppermost and the pipe connections to the underside, (refer to illustration). Tighten nuts to 8 Nm. 5. Slacken the modulator valve air filter fixing and tilt the filter to approximately 45°, (refer to illustration). The open port at the base of the filter should now be facing the rear of the engine. Tighten fixing while retaining filter in its new position.
