Discovery Defender Range Rover Classic

AFFECTED RANGE:

All vehicles with 300 Tdi diesel engines prior to the following VINs: Discovery - WA 756137 Defender - VA 133210 Classic - All 300 Tdi

PROBLEM:

OIL LEAK FROM REAR OF ENGINE - VARIOUS

CAUSE:

Poor sealing in either of the following areas:

Rear oil seal housing to cylinder block. Flywheel housing to cylinder block. Sump to cylinder block.

ACTION:

To improve sealing in the areas described, a revision to the sealant type and sealing process has been introduced. The newly introduced liquid sealant replaces the gasket previously used on the rear main oil seal carrier and the sealant used on the flywheel housing and sump joint faces. The VINs provided in AFFECTED RANGE indicate the introduction of this revised process.

General: It is unlikely that all areas described will require attention, therefore close inspection is required before components are separated. The following information is to be used as guidance notes along with the relevant existing Workshop Manual information.

Preparation: Separate the joint found to be leaking. If the rear oil seal housing is affected, this must be replaced by new part LUF100430. Remove all traces of old sealant or gasket remains from mating faces, a suitable scraper or wire brush may be required. Use a degreasing agent to remove all traces of oil from contact surfaces.

NOTE: To assist separation of sump from cylinder block and to avoid flange distortion, run a sharp knife around the joint line to cut through the original sealant.

REAR OIL SEAL HOUSING SEALING:

Referring to illustration 1, apply a path of liquid sealant part number STC4171 as shown, to the new housing LUF100430, noting that the 5mm sealant bead must be applied to the lower edge of the housing flange. Assemble immediately to cylinder block taking care when handling that sealant bead is not disturbed. Tighten fixings to 25 Nm. NOTE: A GASKET IS NO LONGER REQUIRED.

Refer also to Overhaul Manual - 300Tdi Engine for important information on assembly using the in - situ seal guide provided with the new seal housing.

SUMP SEALING:

Referring to illustration 3, apply a path of liquid sealant part number STC4171 to the sump flange as shown. Assemble immediately to cylinder block taking care when handling that sealant bead is not disturbed. Tighten fixings to 25 Nm.

General Notes: • Avoid sliding housings or sump along block surfaces when assembling since this will disturb their sealant bead positions.

FLYWHEEL HOUSING SEALING:

Referring to illustration 2, apply a path of liquid sealant part number STC4171 as shown, noting that the 5mm sealant bead must be applied to the upper edge of the flywheel housing lower casting flange. Assemble immediately to cylinder block taking care when handling that sealant bead is not disturbed. Tighten fixings to 45 Nm.

• Time delay when assembling joints will adversely effect sealant performance.

• Sufficient sealant cure time is important, oil should not be allowed contact with sealant until the sealant has skinned over, (approximately 10 minutes minimum).

• If applied correctly, one tube of sealant STC4171 is sufficient for sealing one sump or either or both the rear oil seal housing and flywheel housing.
