PROBLEM:

STOP AND REVERSE LIGHT FUSE - ‘BLOWING’

CAUSE:

Since the introduction of 1999 model year Defender Td5 vehicles, reports have been received which detail flat batteries and inoperative stop and reverse lights caused by the failure of fuse 5 (10 amp) in the main fuse box. This fuse protects both the excitation feed from alternator to battery and stop and reverse lights. The cause of failure has been identified as excessive electrical load when a trailer has been connected to the circuit. Should the trailer electrical load be in excess of 3.5 amps (2x21w) above the normal vehicle electrical load, fuse 5 will blow.

ACTION:

Replace fuse 5 (10 amp) with a 15 amp fuse and apply the new fuse label to the inside of the fuse box cover. A small number of vehicles may already have had this fuse replaced in this instance the new fuse box label must be fitted.

PROCEDURE

• Locate the main fuse box inside the vehicle. • Remove the fuse box cover. • Remove fuse 5, (10 amp) and replace with a 15 amp fuse. • Apply the new fuse label to the inside of the fuse box cover. • Refit the fuse box cover.
