SUBJECT LT230T Transfer Gearbox Power Take Off (PTO) Cover Plate Leak

MODEL AFFECTED VEHICLES

Discovery Discovery from LJ 081991 Defender Defender from LD 939976

DETAIL

A number of reports have been received which detail oil leaks eminating from the power take off (PTO) cover plate on the rear of the transfer gearbox. At the VIN identified above a new manufacturing process was implemented that eliminated the use of conventional gaskets and introduced liquid Hylogrip 2000. Investigation by Land Rover engineers found that the cause of these oil leaks can be attributed to two conditions:

1) Insufficient sealant applied to the joint faces of mating parts. 2) Joint face on PTO cover not flat.

ACTION REQUIRED

Upon customer complaint of an oil leak from this area or if identified during normal servicing follow the procedure below.

PARTS INFORMATION

STC 611 Hylogrip sealant.

FTC 3178 PTO cover plate

PROCEDURE

Refer to section 41 of the workshop manual for PTO cover plate removal instructions.

Remove the PTO cover plate and clean any residual sealant from both joint faces of the plate and gearbox casing. Check PTO cover plate joint face for flatness using a straight edge, replace the cover plate if excessive distortion is noted, greater than .010 inch (0.25 mm). Any small raised areas on the joint face can be carefully removed using a fine file. Apply Hylogrip 2000 to the joint face of the transfer gearbox casing and refit the cover plate. Refit the bolts and tighten to 29 to 37 lbf ft, 39 to 50 Nm, 4 to 5 Kgf/m
