PROBLEM:

The SLABS ECU interprets signals from the wheel speed sensors incorrectly, causing brake pressure to be reduced in circumstances when it should be maintained.

CAUSE:

Metallic debris from within the hub bearing intermittently attaches to the wheel speed sensor. This creates an additional spike on the sensor output sine wave, which the SLABS ECU calculates as a faster than actual wheel speed.

ACTION:

Recall the affected vehicles and replace the SLABS ECU with a new part containing revised software.

PROCEDURE

1. Connect TestBook to the vehicle and load Disc DRG0014. 2. Establish diagnostic link with SLS & ABS system and check for faults. Clear any faults that exist. 3. From the ‘VEHICLE MAINTENANCE’ screen follow the procedure for ‘ECU REPLACEMENT’. TestBook will read the data from the current ECU and prompt for a new ECU to be fitted. 4. Replace the SLABS ECU, following Service Repair Procedure 70.65.01 detailed in the Brakes section of Discovery Workshop Manual VDR 100090. 5. TestBook may now prompt for a System Test and/or SLS Calibration, follow the TestBook prompts. Td5 models 6. End the SLS and ABS diagnostics, the process is now complete. V8 models 7. Select the diagnostics for petrol engine and select ‘VEHICLE MAINTENANCE’. 8. Select ‘ECM CHECKS AND RENEWAL’ and follow the TestBook prompts.
