PROBLEM:

THROTTLE CABLE DAMAGE

CAUSE:

Damage may occur during vehicle manufacture due to the cable being moved aside to allow fitment of under bonnet components.

ACTION:

All V8 RH and LH drive vehicles in the affected range are to be recalled to inspect the throttle cable for damage and where necessary replace the cable with a quality assured part.

PROCEDURE

1. Locate the throttle cable grommet in the bulkhead (fig 1 in illustration). 2. Twist the grommet to release the cable from the bulkhead (fig 1 in illustration). 3. Disconnect the cable from the operating lever at the throttle body, carefully inspect the throttle cable outer covering where it exits the nose of the grommet (fig 2 in illustration). 4. If the throttle cable is not damaged it will exit the nose of the grommet at 90 degrees to the flange with no evidence of stress marks on the outer cable, carry out step 6 to check that no polishing or damage is evident on the inner cable.

5. If the cable does not exit the grommet at 90 degrees to the flange and there is evidence of a ‘white’ stress mark at the grommet nose (fig 3 in illustration) the cable must be replaced. 6. As a secondary check, slide the throttle cable outer cover towards the operating lever to expose 40 mm of inner cable at the bulkhead. Carefully inspect the inner cable for evidence of polishing (fig 4 ‘A’ in illustration) and / or broken individual strands (fig 5 in illustration). The polishing will cause one side of the cable to appear brighter when compared with the normal matt finish of the inner cable. Cables exhibiting signs of polished or broken strands must be replaced. 7. Replace the throttle cable, refer to Workshop Manual, part number VDR100090, Engine Management System - V8, Cable - Throttle. 8. Apply a red paint identification mark above the throttle cable grommet on the bulkhead, to indicate that the throttle cable has been inspected or replaced with a new cable. 9. Endorse the Service Portfolio.
