PROBLEM:

POWER STEERING PUMP - DURABILITY

CAUSE:

Investigations into power steering pump shaft failure has found that the pump shaft exhibits ‘tri-lobing’ (ie, out of roundness) as a result of an incorrect grinding process. This condition can set up stress areas around the pump shaft which will affect the long term durability of the power steering pump.

ACTION:

At the first available opportunity replace the power steering pump with a quality assured part. It must also be noted that new bolts are required that are longer than existing. (see parts section). Some vehicles may not require a pump replacement as the pump may have been replaced as a standard warranty repair therefore an inspection claim must be carried out to determine the date code of the pump.

PROCEDURE

• Inspect date code of pump, if the date code is before ‘12-7-97’ the pump will require replacement, if the date code is later than ‘12-7-97’ no further action is required other than the submission of an inspection claim. • Refer to the workshop manual for removal, refitting and bleeding process of power steering pump. • Fit 3 new securing bolts FS108207L.
