AFFECTED RANGE:

All vehicles without drivers air bag prior to VIN VA 740111

PROBLEM:

SCRAPING NOISE FROM CENTRE OF STEERING WHEEL

When the steering wheel is turned in either direction a scraping noise is heard

CAUSE:

Resonance of the horn contact spring on the steering wheel horn ring

ACTION:

Where a customer complaint of the above is confirmed, fit a 25 mm long shrink wrap damping sleeve (see PARTS INFORMATION ) to the horn contact spring using the following procedure:

1. Ensure that the road wheels are straight ahead.

2. Remove the horn push and electrical connectors from the centre of the steering wheel and remove the steering wheel.

3. Lower the fuse box cover, take out three fixing screws and remove the steering cowl.

4. Remove the horn contact spring (see illustration inset) by removing the fixing screw ‘A’ and sliding the lower part of the spring from the electrical spade connector.

5. Slide the shrink wrap sleeve ‘B’ over the contact spring so that it just covers the fixing screw hole.

6. With a heat gun held at a distance of approximately 200mm, shrink the sleeving onto the contact spring.

7. With a sharp knife, carefully make a hole ‘C’ in the sleeving to correspond with the fixing hole in the contact spring and to receive the fixing screw.

8. Reverse the dismantling procedure to reassemble. Torque the steering wheel nut to 50 Nm.

NOTE:

Care must be taken to ensure that the horn contact spring is not damaged in any way.
