DETAIL

To overcome a squeak from the steering column and to address customer criticism, Manufacturing engineers have introduced onto production a revised gaiter. This gaiter can be retro fitted onto all vehicles within the above Vin range.

Note: This bulletin supersedes 57/04/95/EN, please remove issue 1 and replace with issue 2 the infomation in the affected vehicles box has changed.

ACTION REQUIRED

Upon customer complaint of a squeak from the steering column, fit the new bush following the procedure detailed below.

PROCEDURE

1. Park the vehicle with the steering aligned in the straight ahead position. 2. Remove the drivers fascia closure panel. 3. Remove ramp bracket (see illustration on second page). ----------------------------------------------4. Left hand drive V8 vehicles, remove the air cleaner hose from the plenum to air filter and cover openings on the plenum and air filter to prevent debris entering the system. 5. Left hand drive Diesel models, remove the air cleaner and turbo hose, cover all openings to prevent debris entering the system. 6. Remove upper intermediate steering shaft bolt (nearest bulkhead) slacken middle intermediate steering shaft bolt. 7. Pull steering shaft off end of steering column and lay to rest.

8. From inside the vehicle prise steering gaiter from bulkhead and push down steering column to remove . 9. Inspect gaiter for damage - replace if necessary. 10. Clean any grease from the gaiter. 11. Glue bush into gaiter as per illustration using a super glue, allow glue to cure. (check the bush has a split through the side, this can be achived with a standard Hacksaw blade). see illustration on front page. 12. Lubricate inside of the bush and all over outside of the gaiter particularly around the outer lip. 13. Refit the gaiter over steering column and into bulkhead ensuring gaiter is seated correctly. 14. Inside vehicle check the bush is still in place on gaiter if not remove and repeat the operation. 15. Refit ramp bracket (see illustration opposite). 16. Refit closure panel. 17. Refit intermediate steering shaft, refit and torque steering bolts to 25 Nm. 18. Refit air cleaner/turbo hoses as required. 19. Carry out steering alignment process as per bulletin 57/01/95/EN.
