Swivel assembly - Fill For Life Grease

MODEL

Discovery Discovery Defender

DETAIL

The front swivel assembly on Discovery and Defender models are currently filled with EP 90 oil. From the above Vin numbers the front swivels will be filled for life with 375ml EP00 grease, because the swivels will be filled for life the drain and level plugs have been removed. The swivel assembly/swivel bearing housing can be retro fitted to vehicles that have oil filled swivels. If a vehicle develops an oil leak and investigation shows the chrome finish swivel bearing housing (cup) is sufficiently pitted or damaged to warrant a replacement a new swivel bearing housing should be fitted and may be filled with grease. Should this be the case the swivel bearing housing on the other side of the vehicle MUST be drained and likewise filled with grease to ensure that both left/right hand swivel housings are to the same condition. Note: Service records must be amended to show that the fill for life grease has been used, and the filler and drain plugs should be identified with yellow paint. From the above Vin numbers the swivels will not require checking at PDI or at Normal service intervals, The service schedules will be amended to in due course to reflect this change.

ACTION REQUIRED :

Information only: In the event of an oil leak, drain all the oil, check swivel bearing housing for pitting, if pitting is not evident fit new seal and fill with grease (375ml). If the swivel is pitted the housing should be replaced.

PARTS INFORMATION

STC 3435 Grease satchet containing molytex grease Type EP00

The above part at present is unavailable, should you have cause to replace oil with grease the above specification should be used. Further information on availability of the sachet of grease from Unipart will be detailed in a future issue 2 of this bulletin.

PROCEDURE

Axles from the above Vin numbers should not have the grease removed unless there is a need to strip down the swivel for repair or service work to be carried out.

In the event of a strip down, the correct measure of grease should be replaced, this can be done by obtaining a measured container from Unipart for refilling. A label has been developed which identifies the action has been carried out, and will be supplied with each container, and should be affixed to the bonnet slam panel only when oil has been drained and refilled with grease. Note: The steering must be on full lock to assist access when filling the swivels with grease.

Care point: Wash hands thoroughly after use.
