LT230t Transfer Gearbox Whine

MODEL

Discovery V8 Manual and Automatic derivatives for UK Market North American Specification European and Rest of World

DETAIL

A number of reports have been received that detail excessive whine from LT230t transfer gearboxes when operating the vehicle at motorway cruising speeds. Investigations by Land Rover engineers have found that this whine is caused by noise transmitted into the interior, rather than by an excessively noise transfer box, it can therefore, be ‘tuned’ out by fitting a modified transfer gearbox lever and knob. The modification includes the fitment of an attenuated (damped) gearlever and ‘heavy’ transfer gearlever knob. The new parts will considerably reduce the noise level transmitted into the vehicle. Heavy knob only fitted in Vin range 126155 to 136970. Atenuated gear lever and heavy gear lever knob fitted from 136970

NOTE: Manual and automatic derivatives manufactured from LJ 126155 are fitted with the ‘heavy’ gearknob and will only require to be fitted with the new atenuated lever, use kit STC 2945K. Vehicles prior to LJ 126155 will require kit STC 2915K. North American specification vehicles from LJ 126065 have been built to the improved condition

ACTION REQUIRED

Upon customer complaint of transfer gearbox whine at motorway cruising speeds fit the new parts following the procedure below. Do not replace the transfer box without first contacting Land Rover service

PARTS INFORMATION

STC 2915K gear lever kit-upto LJ 126155 ( this kit includes atenuated gear lever and heavy knob).

STC 2945K gear lever kit-from LJ 126156 ( this kit includes the atenuated gear lever only).

Sikaflex 221 sealant or similar. see bulletin 075/92/EN for information.

PROCEDURE

5) Clean the mating faces of the transfer gearbox and gear lever housing.

6) Strip down the gear lever housing to enable the transfer gear box lever to be removed.

7) Grease the pivot points of the new attenuated lever and assemble to the gearlever housing, ensure that the bend in the new lever faces towards the rear of the vehicle.

8) Refit the gearlever housing, fitting the new gasket supplied in the kit between the housing and gearbox.

9) Leave off the old high/low lever gaiter and its retaining plate. Replace the four fixing bolts back into the housing, (see illustration).

10) Prior to refitting the tunnel gaiter ensure that the mating cases are free from debris and metal particles from the previous drilling operation, apply Sikaflex 221 sealant or similar to gaiter mating faces to ensure a good seal.

11) Refit the gaiter plate with the new pop rivets.

12) Manual gearbox derivatives only; Refit the main gearlever.

13) Refit the centre console, refer to the workshop manual section 76.

14) Fit the modified High/Low lever knob (Vehicles upto VIN 126155 only) .
