Transfer Gearbox - Difficult Engagement

MODEL AFFECTED VEHICLES

Discovery V8 automatic derivatives From LJ 064755 to Discovery V8 LJ 081991

DETAIL

A number of Product Reports have been received which detail poor engagement of low range with centre differential unlocked. Investigation at Land Rover has identified a potential foul condition between the transfer gearbox lever and the tunnel top sealing plate which prevents full engagement of low range. To overcome this condition new parts have been introduced which provide more clearance between the transfer gearbox lever and aperture in the sealing plate.

ACTION REQUIRED

Where difficult low range engagement is experienced remove the gearbox tunnel console and inspect to ensure a foul condition does not exist between transfer gearbox lever and tunnel sealing plate.

PARTS INFORMATION

New parts required:

BTR 9812 - Tunnel sealing plate BTR 9813 - Gaiter seal, high/low BTR 9816 - Seal, tunnel sealing plate BTR 9814 - Gaiter retainer

PROCEDURE

1) Remove the centre console. (Refer to the workshop manual section 76) 2) Select low range with differential lock disengaged. 3) Clearance should be evident between the transfer gearbox lever and tunnel sealing plate aperture shown in the illustration opposite at point ' A ' . 4) If the gearlever contacts the aperture whilst low range is selected the new parts identified in the parts information should be fitted. 5) Drill out the rivets securing the plate and seal to the tunnel. Remove any steel debris produced by the drilling procedure. 6) Fit the new parts and check to ensure the foul condition has been alleviated. 7) Re-fit the console.
